Homework
"The Rule of Thumb" for homework is usually 10 minutes per day per grade level (not counting Kindergarten). Third Graders should be averaging about 30 minutes of study time at home per day. This time includes the 20 minutes of reading that is expected 5 days a week. If you need books for your child to read at home, know that they will have an opportunity to check out library books each week. Please let me know if your child needs more reading material at home.
Math homework will be sent home one night per week - usually on Tuesdays. Math homework will consist of Math Homework Sheets from our My Math Curriculum - these sheets practice and review the skills we are working on in school. Sometimes there will also be some math facts to practice. Any time you get a chance to have your child tell time on a clock with a face, or to count coins/change around the house, will be time well spent practicing math skills as well. Math homework should be done at home, and sent back to school within 1 - 3 days. (I know how busy things can get at home, so if you don't get a chance to do the homework right away, it is fine to keep it an extra day or two.)
We will be doing spelling tests in third grade. Each week there are specific spelling words that need to be mastered. At the beginning of the week, we will take a pretest, and students will be asked to practice spelling the words that they struggled with on the pretest. If a student already knows how to spell all of the words for the week, new challenge words will be assigned to help the student push themselves a little harder in spelling. Spelling tests will generally be on Fridays, and will occur every school week that there is 4 or 5 days in a week. Shorter weeks will be used for review in spelling.
If you have any questions or concerns about homework, don't hesistate to call me or email me at work!
